THE DEFENDER OF MY HEART

Songs are meant to move you. I feel like that's what worship does. It bypasses the mind, and cuts to the heart.

Worship is not meant to be a ritual on Sunday mornings. It becomes a lifestyle. Worship comes as a response from the heart, which has been deeply moved. Of course, at times, we don't always remember how Jesus changed our hearts in an instant. Sometimes we don't feel like worshipping. Does that mean we put a pause on worship? Does that mean we tuck away our gratitude for a brighter day?
We must worship, even when it's inconvenient.
God tends to set everything up for us, including worship. Doesn't music make it easier to worship? What an intentional creator. Even in the midst of worship to God, He is still giving to us. The gift giving of our good father is endless. Sometimes when I am tired and don't feel like worshipping, I have this very conversation in my head. The conclusion (no matter how long it takes to get there) is always the same: no excuse is greater than the need to worship.
My favorite worships songs are ones that are context rich. They are full of thanks and God's promises. Here are a few of my favorite praise and worship songs and my favorite versions:
1. In the River by Jonathon Ferguson
Warning: this song will get you jumping. When I first heard this song, I couldn't stop dancing. I was teaching dance camps in the summer and decided to create a little combo to the song. The girls had so much fun, and it ended up being their favorite dance of the week. It's fun worshipping while working.
2. Fall by The Belonging Co
"My eyes above what it looks like," is the epitome of believing in God's promises over everything else. This song reminds us all of God's sovereignty and that suffering ranks no where close.
3. Defender by Rita Springer
De·fend (v) - to drive danger or attack away from.
God has gone before us, He is our defender. This song articulates how everything is done out of love, to the point where love itself is our defense. All we have to do be is obedient, all we have to do is receive. Many of us have tried to save ourselves, but it's "so much better [God's] way."
Right now, stop and worship. Breakthrough is just around the corner.
Psalm 59:16
But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.
